Brief History of Facility

The Lake Charles plant is the World's largest fluid cracking catalyst manufacturing plant. It functions as a world-wide sourcing facility representing 80% of Davison's U.S.A. fluid cracking catalyst capacity.

The Lake Charles Louisiana facility of the GRACE Davison Division of W.R. Grace & Co.-Conn. was originally built in the 1950's to provide the Gulf Coast area with manufacturing facilities for synthetic fluid cracking catalyst. It was completed and dedicated April 18, 1953, and, presently, it is the largest of Davison's four catalyst plants.

Lake Charles was selected as the plant site because of its central location in the Gulf Coast between the two large refining centers of Baton Rouge and Houston. Lake Charles was also considered ideal because many of the raw materials required were locally available, along with transportation by water, rail, highway, and air. There was also an ample supply of skilled labor and reasonably priced gas and electricity.

Expansion and modernization have been the major factors supporting the growth of the Lake Charles Plant and the importance placed on it to supply the changing requirements of refineries throughout the world.

Emergency Response Equipment & Personnel

This facility has trained mmergency response teams on each operations shift. This asures that response capability is available at all times. The teams are trained in the following areas of response:

  • Hazardous Material Technician
  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Medic First Aid
  • Medical First Responder Level

The teams have been furnished the needed supplies and equipment to fulfill their duties in the above mentioned areas. The teams will respond to all emergencies within their capabilites. If the circumstances of a particular event are beyond their capabilities in regards to training and equipment, the team Incident Commander will contact designated outside agencies for assistance. However, teams are trained and equipped to handle all credible response scenarios for the facility.

Public Awareness Notification in the Event of an Incident

This facility is a member of the Calcasieu Parish Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) organization. As a member, we have at our disposal a CAER radio capable of communicating with other industry, the local municipalities, Parish and State authorities. Representative is Dean Courville.

We have also participated in the purchase and installation of a warning speaker system located throughout the communities. These are controlled and activated by the municipalities based on information supplied by the various industries.

Reporters and camera crews covering an emergency should go to:

  • Main entrance at 1800 Davison Road. If required, a road block will be established at the intersection LA 1133 and Davison Road. The media will be met at the roadblock and will receive a briefing by GRACE Davison personnel. When conditions permit, the media will be escorted to the Plant conference room located in the Administration building.
  • If a road block is not required, media representatives should identify themselves to the Security guard at the main entrance. They will then be directed to the conference room.
  • Media representatives will be given timely briefings by GRACE Davison representatives as information becomes available. Telephone will be made available for media use. Once the situation is under control, media representatives will be allowed at the scene under the direction and supervision of GRACE Davison personnel. All photography and video taping will be under the direction of GRACE Davison personnel.

Mutual Aid Member. Representative is Dean Courville.
