Brief History of Facility
Entergy, headquarted in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a major global energy company with power production, distribution operations, and related diversified services. Entergy owns, manages, or invests in power plants generating nearly 30,000 megawatts of electricity domestically and internationally, and delivers electricity to about 2.6 million customers in portions of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. In Louisiana, Entergy Gulf States has 631,000 customers, and in Southwest Louisiana, Entergy serves approximately 70,000 customers.
Entergy operates eight nuclear plants with a combined capability of 8900 megawatts. These plants rank in the top quartile of the US nuclear industry based on operating and safety performance. Already a top-quartile performer, the Fossil Generation organization operates 29 generating facilities--coal, natural gas, oil, petroleum coke, and hydro--with a combined capability of 17,788 megawatts.
Both natural gas and coal generating units are located at Nelson Power Plant in the Lake Charles area in Westlake, Louisiana. Nelson Power Plant began generating electricity in 1959 with two gas fired generating units. Two additional gas fired units were completed in 1960 & 1970. Nelson 6, a coal fired generating unit was built in 1982. Units 1 & 2 have become part of the Nelson Industrial Steam Co. Today Nelson Plant generates 1,413 MW of electricity.
Operating a system composed of more than 15,500 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and 1450 transmission substations, Entergy's Transmission Business provides top-quartile cost performance and is recognized by the marketplace for delivery reliability.
Preparing for retail competition, Entergy is focusing on its Distribution Business: the entity that owns the wires that make the electrical connection between customers and the transmission system, and sells. By dedicating resources now to the group most responsible for customer service, Entergy is building sustaining customer relationships as the US electric industry moves toward competition.
